Lando Norris sends ominous message over Belgian GP with watchful eye on Red Bull

McLaren driver Lando Norris has hinted he has more in store for the Belgian Grand Prix despite being fastest in second free practice at Spa.

Just days after the team secured only the second top-two win since 2010 in Hungary, McLaren topped the field during the second practice session in Belgium.

Lando Norris not ‘super comfortable’ despite stormy Belgian GP showing

Norris set the tone with a fastest lap time of 1:42.260, more than two tenths faster than teammate Oscar Piastri.

Reigning world champion Max Verstappen was slightly slower than Piastri in FP2, after having set the fastest time in opening practice earlier on Friday. However, the Red Bull driver will receive a 10-place grid penalty in Spa due to the new engine.

While McLaren look the big favourites to win at Spa, Norris warned that Red Bull look “very quick” at the moment.

And despite his fearsome pace, the Miami Grand Prix winner did not feel “very comfortable” on track on Friday, with Norris hoping to get into a better rhythm for qualifying.

Evaluating his day, he said: “Good. Still tough, still close.

“Red Bull is very quick at the moment, so it’s difficult. But I just didn’t feel comfortable with the car today, so hopefully I’ll wake up tomorrow and feel a bit more comfortable with it.

“We’re trying to improve a few things. I know it looked good on the timesheets, but I didn’t feel super comfortable just doing it.

“So hopefully I can get into a bit more of a rhythm and feel a bit better there.”

When asked if he had any ideas to improve his feeling with the car for Saturday, Norris indicated that only minor adjustments would be needed.

“Not at this point because I just got out of the car two seconds ago,” he said.

“I don’t think it’s much (that’s required). We can always come to a circuit now and be within a few millimetres of the margin straight away.

“It’s not like you ever change the whole car overnight. If you do that, you haven’t done it well enough for the weekend.

“We’ve prepared well and the car is set up well and it works, but when I look at it like that – just because I feel like I can do it and perfect it – I’m not quite there yet.”

Wet conditions are expected on Saturday at Spa, where Norris suffered a heavy crash during a rainy session in 2021.

Norris indicated that McLaren will likely use a high downforce setup to deal with the rain, and the team is already working in that direction, regardless of the forecast.

He said: “There will be questions about downforce.”

“Of course in the rain you generally want more downforce and I think that is the right direction anyway.

“But I don’t know that yet, so I’m going to sit down with my boys and we’ll talk about it.”
