Erik ten Hag ignored Man Utd duo after incident as Bruno Fernandes exposes dressing room

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag appears to be at risk of losing another member of his leadership unit amid speculation Bruno Fernandes could leave Old Trafford this summer

The potential departure of Bruno Fernandes from Manchester United could leave Erik ten Hag short of leadership figures.

That comes after the Dutchman left out two of the squad’s most prominent figures when naming his leadership team last year. Ten Hag, 54, was widely praised for appointing Fernandes as Harry Maguire’s successor to the captaincy last season, but the potential departure of the Portuguese star could expose the United dressing room amid reports that Paris Saint-Germain are trying to lure him away from Old Trafford.

Fernandes, 29, is not the only major presence at United, with Luke Shaw, Christian Eriksen, David De Gea and Raphael Varane previously named as leaders by the manager. However, the latter duo have since left the club, leaving the Red Devils somewhat thin on the ground when it comes to big voices.

That issue was highlighted after a 6-3 humiliation against Manchester City in October 2022, which resulted in an investigation between both the manager and the players. The Sun reported at the time that Scott McTominay – who could also be sold this summer – and Lisandro Martinez were two of the most vocal players in that process.

And yet they were not named by their boss as part of that group of unofficial United leaders six months later. Fans will hope his apparent perception of the pair has changed at a time when the dressing room needs people to speak out.

“I have a lot of leaders in De Gea, Varane, Eriksen and Shaw,” Ten Hag said ahead of United’s 3-2 defeat at Arsenal in January 2023. “I’m not worried about leadership and with this team we beat them the first time and we have confidence in this team.”

The manager has a strong bond with World Cup winner Martinez, having worked with the defender during their time at Ajax. However, his relationship with McTominay appears to be becoming more tense amid growing rumours that the Scotland international could leave, with Fulham having a £17million bid rejected.

The homegrown product continued to prove his worth to the squad without ever really cementing a starting role at United last season, and while McTominay is a favourite for many, his results on the pitch may not match the vocal presence he provides.
