3 Brazilian athletes win appeal to compete in Paris Olympics in track and field

PARIS — Three Brazilian track and field athletes won a court ruling Friday that will allow them to compete in the Paris Olympics despite the South American country’s substandard anti-doping program.

Shot putter Livia Avancini, race walker Max Batista and sprinter Hygor Bezerra were blocked by the Athletics Integrity Unit after failing to comply with stricter doping controls required ahead of the Paris Games.

The three athletes appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The special Olympic court in Paris granted their legal objections in an expedited procedure.

The three-judge CAS panel decided that the athletes met the “truly exceptional circumstances” exception allowed by the World Athletics rules.

Brazil was one of four countries that were placed under special measures by the AIU in March, the others being Ecuador, Peru and Portugal.

The AIU recommended that non-elite athletes from the four countries would only be allowed to compete in Paris if they had taken a sample without prior notice during training at least three times in the 10 months up to July.

The Monaco researchers said the policy would protect the Olympics “from athletes who rise quickly through the rankings or produce surprising performances, or from athletes where the amount of talent means that results are unpredictable.”

The athletics events of the Paris Olympic Games begin next Thursday.
