Iranian Documentary “Destiny” Wins 2 Awards at Italy’s Faito Doc Festival

TEHRAN—Yaser Talebi’s Iranian documentary “Destiny” has won two awards at the 18th Faito Doc Festival, held in Italy from July 17 to 24.

Talebi’s film won the award for Best in Two Parts, selected by the Youth Jury and the Jury De Mooie, Mehr reported.

The documentary follows the life of 18-year-old Sahar, who takes on the role of caregiver for her poor, mentally disabled father in a remote village in Iran after her mother dies. She dreams of going to university and becoming a doctor, but must assume the role of caregiver unless her father remarries, ILNA reported.

The 2022 production is a warm and intimate observational portrait, in which the people and emotions reveal themselves. There is a tangle of relationships and expectations at work, involving family, friends, religion, social expectations and social media. It is a window into contemporary Iran, capturing a young woman caught between traditional gender roles and her desire for self-determination.

It is a touching film that tenderly invites us into the close relationship between a young girl and her disabled father. The story of every daily movement is transformed into a sign of love and the inner beauty of the two protagonists is even seen in their choices in life, towards each other, full of wisdom.

Last November, the film won the Best Foreign Language Film Award at the 9th Peloponnese International Documentary Festival in Greece.

The originality of Faito Doc lies in the combination of a ‘natural cinematographic’ place with the seventh art, nourished by a spirit of joyful brotherhood that reaches the participant, actor or spectator of the event and makes him or her the protagonist of a cultural celebration. Authors and directors come from all over the world with their own visions of reality to present their films.

Over the years, the festival has sown a wealth of ideas and values that have restored the cultural relevance of Monte Faito, regenerating the spirit of the area and stimulating good energy and new activities in the area. The Faito is an extra-urban place, a natural park at 1,131 metres above sea level that embraces two gulfs, overlooking the Bay of Naples, Vesuvius, the islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida. It is a landscape steeped in nostalgia, that appears and disappears in the clouds.
