Mayo firm makes key appointment – news

Mellett, headquartered in Claremorris, has announced the appointment of Alf Smiddy to the company’s Board of Directors and Chairman. Mellett, a 180-employee company, is expanding its operations in Ireland and into more countries in Europe, where it is currently involved in supporting flagship projects. The company was founded in 2010 by Brendan Mellett.

The appointment of Alf Smiddy as Chairman marks a significant milestone for the company. Under his leadership and with his support, the company is poised to continue its path of success and innovation in the data center sector.

The company specialises in providing high-quality electrical contracting services, primarily for data centres, and operates in Ireland, Denmark and Sweden. Mellett has completed projects for a number of high-profile clients, delivering for the world’s leading hyperscale and colocation data centre companies.

ABOUT THE APPOINTMENT

Alf Smiddy is a chartered accountant by profession, trained at PwC. He is Senior Independent Non-Executive Director of the ESB and was previously Senior Independent Non-Executive Director at The Dalata Hotel Group Plc.

He is Chairman and Director of several independent companies including Granite Digital (digital marketing), Fohntech Ltd, Carrigaline Court Hotel Ltd and EHS International Ltd.

He was CFO and subsequently Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Beamish & Crawford plc and served on the board of its parent company, Scottish & Newcastle (UK) Ltd.

He was also a member of the National Executive Council of IBEC, a Director of the Cork Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Cork Local Government Committee and served on the Board of the Cork Airport Authority.

He is a member of the Board of Oxfam Ireland and was also Director of the government-backed Rethink Ireland (Social Innovation).

A graduate in Commerce from UCC, with a Masters in Executive Leadership from Boston College and the University of Ulster. A Fellow of the Irish Marketing Institute. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the College of Business & Law, University College Cork.
