In response to the oft-asked question, “How hot is it?” Sunday, July 21, was recorded as the hottest day on record, according to preliminary data from climate change experts. Wildfires are raging again in British Columbia, and tourists are feeling the heat in Europe.

As summer heat waves intensify, travelers are looking for cooler destinations for their summer vacations.

Erin Florio, editor in chief of Conde Nast Traveler, recently told CBS News that North Americans are increasingly booking trips to Canada and Northern Europe to escape the heat.

According to a 2023 report from the World Travel & Tourism Council, bookings for cold-climate destinations are up 25% year-on-year.

Virtuoso spokeswoman Misty Belles recently told Bloomberg News that Scandinavia is “having a moment.” Belles said Sweden has seen a 47% increase in bookings, while bookings in Italy are up just 3%.

“A coolcation is one of the newer post-COVID travel trends — people are seeking vacation destinations with cooler climates, especially during the warmer summer months,” Gabe Saglie, a senior editor at Travelzoo, told the Huffington Post. “Some popular travel destinations are seeing rising temperatures, making them too hot to be comfortable for some, so it’s becoming increasingly appealing to head to alternative spots with more pleasant daytime temperatures.”

Here are 10 suggestions for a great “coolcation.”
