Austin Italian Restaurant Intero Opens New Gelato Truck Piccola Gelateria

Austin Italian restaurant Intero is opening a gelato truck this summer. Piccola Gelateria will be parked outside Intero’s other Italian restaurant, Poeta at the Frances Modern Inn, in Central East Austin at 1123 East 11th Street, starting Wednesday, July 24.

Piccola offers scoops of gelato and sorbets. The former’s flavors include roasted white chocolate, pistachio, amaretto, cinnamon, espresso, and golden fig. The latter features a seasonal fruit (currently it’s Texas blueberry), as well as dark chocolate, coconut, and hibiscus beet. There’s also the option to add pizzelles, Italian waffle cookies.

Intero and Poeta co-owner and co-founder Krystal Craig oversees Piccola’s menu. The chef’s first job was actually at an Amy’s Ice Cream shop; she also runs Intero’s chocolate program. The truck’s name, Piccola Gelateria, is Italian for “little ice cream shop.”

For Piccola’s first day of service, the candy truck is running a special opening offer with $1 scoops (limited to three per person) available from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. or until sold out. Then, the truck will offer half-price scoops that week through Sunday, July 28.

Husband and wife team Craig and chef Ian Thurwatcher opened Intero in the Holly neighborhood in 2018. They followed that up with Poeta Italian Cafe in the Frances Modern Inn in 2023, taking over from the earlier expansion of another Italian cafe, Uncle Nicky’s (which has since moved its second location to South Lamar).

Piccola is open daily from 11am to 9pm.
