Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille, approximately 225 kilometres north of Paris, is the venue for these prestigious medal matches.

The women’s handball Olympic competition has been dominated by three countries over the last two Olympic Games.

France, Russia and Norway are among the top talents when it comes to women’s handball.

These three teams were the three teams that won a medal in Rio in 2016 and in Tokyo in 2020. Now that Russia has been banned from participating in the Olympic Games, there is room for a new team on the podium.

The battle for gold is likely to remain a battle between France and Norway, with France having the advantage as the reigning champions from Tokyo and now playing on home soil.

Let’s take a look at the odds for the Olympic women’s handball and who has the best chance of winning gold.

The Top Two

As the odds show, there are actually two teams that stand out from the rest for this Olympic competition.

These teams recently faced each other in the final of the 2023 World Cup and handball fans are hoping for a revenge match in the battle for the gold medal in August.

France, who won their first gold medal in women’s handball in Tokyo, are led by Pauletta Foppa.

Foppa scored seven goals in their gold medal game in Tokyo and will lead the team again in Paris. Minko was on the World Championship All-Star team and has scored 397 goals in 169 games for France.

France also has Lena Gradveau, the International Handball Federations’ Young Female Player of the Year 2023. The French team, “Les Bleues”, was a perfect 9-0 at the 2023 World Championships and will look to continue their excellence at these Olympic Games.

With an impressive collection of medals, the Norwegian “Håndballjentene” stands out as a top contender at the Olympic Games. Their performances are a testament to their consistent excellence.

Norway have won the bronze medal at the last two Olympics. They lost a hard-fought battle, 31-28 to France at the 2023 World Women’s Handball Championships, and will be looking for revenge at the Olympics.

Norway is led by Henny Reistad, IHF Player of the Year.

The field has a chance

Most fans and bettors on the Olympic Women’s Handball Odds will not pick a team outside of France or Norway to take home gold. Denmark at +680 is the only team with a solid chance.

Denmark returns to the Olympic podium after missing the last two tournaments. At the World Championships, the Danes won a hard-fought bronze medal.

They narrowly missed out on gold in a thrilling final against Norway, losing by a narrow margin of 27-25.

France and Norway are expected to battle it out for gold, especially with Russia out of the running.

The 26-year-old impressed at the World Cup, ranking third in total goals scored with 47 from 74 shots.

Her accuracy and scoring ability are crucial to Denmark’s success.

The Netherlands was once a powerhouse in the sport, finishing in the top three at the World Championships in 2015, 2017 and 2019 (when they won gold).

They only finished fifth at the 2020 Olympics and have not qualified for the European or World Championships for a few years. They have an experienced team that wants to regain its former glory.

Sweden also has a small chance to make a splash in this tournament. They are in the tougher group (Group A), but that could be useful to sharpen their skills, assuming they survive the group stage.

In 2020 they lost in the battle for bronze and now they are trying to get another chance on the podium.
