Eala stunned with ‘fairytale’ finish for Spain

(UPDATE) FILIPINO tennis sensation Alex Eala couldn’t help but admit that he was overcome with emotion after winning the doubles and singles championship at the W100 Vitoria-Gasteiz in Spain.

Eala took the doubles title with Frenchwoman Estelle Cascino by beating Bulgarian-Latvian duo Lia Karatancheva and Diana Marcinkevica 6-3, 2-6, 10-4 late Saturday night (Manila time).

The 19-year-old Eala, who is ranked 155th in the world, defeated Andorran Victoria Jiménez Kasintseva in the singles final on Sunday evening in straight sets: 6-4, 6-4.

“This win means the world to me, it even made me cry. I’m so proud because this is the culmination of so much hard work,” Eala wrote in an Instagram post.

“Securing my biggest titles to date in both singles and doubles is a fairytale ending, and I am overwhelmed with emotion. This will always have a special place in my heart, and I leave here with a bag full of great memories and the will to work harder.”

This was the first time that Eala won both the doubles and singles titles in one tournament.

Eala has now won two of her four doubles titles on the ITF circuit with Cascino, when they won the W75 Croissy-Beaubourg in France last March.

This is Eala’s fifth singles championship in eight finals in Vitoria-Gasteiz and her first since dominating the W25 Roehampton in August last year.

Eala started her golden run in singles with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Dutchwoman Lian Tran in the round of 32, followed by a 2-0 win over Spain’s Lucia Cortez Llorca.

The two-time Asian Games bronze medalist then defeated Ukraine’s Yulia Starodubtsewa 7-5, 6-4 in the quarterfinals and defeated Mexico’s Maria Jose Portillo Ramirez 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals.

In the final against 18-year-old Kasinteva, Eala almost lost a 5-1 lead in the first set, but in the second set she managed to fend off her tough opponent and decide the match in one hour and 34 minutes.

Eala won her first $100,000 tournament.
