Estonian parliament backs Kristen Michal as new prime minister – POLITICO

The Estonian parliament voted 64 in favor of Climate Minister Kristen Michal as prime minister on Monday, with 27 votes against.

Michal succeeds Kaja Kallas, who resigned as prime minister on July 15 to become the European Union’s new chief diplomat.

After her resignation, Kallas named Michal as a possible candidate to succeed her as prime minister and party chairman. Both politicians come from Estonia’s centrist Reform party.

Michal will lead the same majority coalition as his predecessor, which consists of Reform, the liberal Estonia 200 party and the centre-left Social Democrats.

During Monday’s parliamentary session, Michal gave a 20-minute presentation on his government’s agenda, justifying tax hikes for defense and security reasons, promising governance reforms and boosting economic growth, and defending the green transition.
