A teenager has died after being struck by lightning near the top of Germany’s highest mountain.

The 18 year old German was climbing the Zugspitze with two other men on Sunday afternoon when the tragedy occurred.

They took the cable car to the top and then walked to the summit, a climb of about 80 meters from a terrace.

As the men descended from the summit, lightning struck repeatedly, fatally shocking the 18-year-old, police said.

Officers said the storm was hampering rescue efforts.

The Zugspitze is 9,718 feet above sea level. It is located on the border of Germany and Austria.
