Heatwave warning for European holidaymakers as parts of Spain could reach 42°C

Holidaymakers in Spain have been warned as a heatwave is set to bring temperatures of up to 42°C in parts. Spanish weather forecasters, Aemet, have issued warnings of “intense heat” in the coming days across many popular regions of Spain and the Canary Islands.

The UK’s Met Office has warned holidaymakers heading to south-west Europe this week that parts of Spain, Portugal and Morocco are facing a heatwave early this week.

It says: “Temperatures will be around 45 degrees in some places, but will drop towards the end of the week.”

Spanish agency Aemet said: “Temperatures will be very high for most of this week, reaching temperatures of 40C to 42C in parts of the centre and south of the peninsula, and locally even higher.

“There will also be intense heat in the Canary Islands. Very warm night temperatures will occur in much of the area.”

Seven regions in Spain had warnings of intense heat, with an orange warning with a higher risk in Estremadura. In some places, it could remain warm into the night, with temperatures reaching 40°C from 13:00 to 21:00.

Andalusia, the Balearic Islands, Castile and Leon, Castilla la Mancha, Galicia and Madrid are all under yellow heat warnings – with temperatures expected to reach 34°C to 39°C in some places. On Tuesday, the warnings will be raised to 11 regions, with Madrid, Galicia, Estremadura, Castilla y Leon and Andalusia receiving orange heat warnings.

A warning has been issued for Campiña Cordobesa-Córdoba that temperatures could rise to 42°C tomorrow, while in other areas where code orange applies, the maximum temperature will be 40°C.

There are no signs of a heatwave in the UK, but things are looking set to settle down a bit next week. The UK long-term forecast for the UK says: “Likely to settle down a bit next weekend, although some scattered showers and the possibility of warmer or thundery showers for a while in the south.”

It adds: “Then, changeable weather patterns look set to return in early August. Showers and occasional rain showers are likely to affect all regions. Temperatures are likely to be close to or slightly above average for a while, with warmer spells generally being short-lived.”
