Geely says it is open to working with Malaysia to introduce methanol-powered vehicles here

In 2021, Geely Chairman Li Shufu said the automaker planned to explore the development of methanol-powered vehicles, even though there was a possibility it would not be commercially successful.

The company, which is currently the world’s largest developer and producer of methanol vehicles, has been promoting the alternative fuel for three years now. According to the company, it is an ideal energy source because it is clean in nature and easy to transport and store.

The automaker has now put more than 30,000 methanol vehicles on the road with a combined mileage of around 10 billion km. Now the company wants to use the fuel outside its home market and Europe. It is currently testing methanol-powered vehicles in Denmark, with a view to selling them on the European market.

One such destination could be Malaysia. A while ago, it was reported that Wang Ruiping, vice president of Geely Auto and president of Geely New Energy Powertrain R&D Centre, said that the automaker was open to talks with the country about introducing methanol-powered vehicles here.

“There are potential opportunities (for cooperation). We can talk about the details,” she said when asked about the topic. Whether anything actually comes of this front, of course, remains to be seen.

Geely currently has about 20 methanol-based models in both passenger and commercial vehicle segments, and has obtained 256 patents for methanol technologies. Vehicle models include a Geely Methanol Hybrid version of the Emgrand sedan (on which the Proton S70 is based) and the Farizon M100 heavy-duty truck, which has been tested and certified to meet China VI emissions standards.
