Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kuleba visits China for talks on ending Russian invasion

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba will visit China on Tuesday for talks on ending the Russian invasion, which is now in its third year, his ministry said.

China has refused to condemn the Russian invasion and last year published a document calling for a “political solution” to the conflict, which Western countries say would allow Russia to retain much of the territory it has captured in Ukraine.

“The main topic of discussion will be the search for ways to stop Russian aggression and the possible role of China in achieving a lasting and just peace,” the Foreign Ministry in Kiev said in a statement on Monday announcing the visit.

Beijing confirmed the talks with Kuleba, while Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said the visit was organized at the initiative of the Chinese foreign minister.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hosted a peace summit in Switzerland last month to outline his vision for lasting peace. Russia was not invited.

Beijing, a close political and economic ally of Russia, did not attend the summit in protest over Moscow’s non-invitation.
