Brendan Rodgers has kind words for Benjamin Siegrist as manager confirms Celtic departure is imminent

Benjamin Siegrist looks set to leave Celtic after Brendan Rodgers confirmed he will be looking for professional football elsewhere.

Last weekend, reports emerged that Siegrist is traveling to Romania to hold final negotiations with Rapid Bucharest.

They are now managed by Celtic legend Neil Lennon, who has his eye on players on the fringes of the Bhoys squad to increase his starting options.

Siegrist made just two appearances during his time at Celtic, when he deputised for popular goalkeeper Joe Hart, and has not had any minutes since Rodgers returned.

With Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo arriving at the club last week, there is no place for the Swiss player, who was left out of the squad for the current US tour.

Brendan Rodgers pays tribute to ‘top-notch’ Siegrist

Bhoys boss said (Daily Record): “It’s fair to say Benji wants to move on. He’s been a very professional guy.

“His spirit, he had done well at United and came to Celtic and maybe wanted to play more. When he didn’t, and I can only speak about my year with him, he was exemplary.

“His professionalism, everything about him was first class. And when I spoke last season, we thought that, at this stage of his career, he probably had to play. So I believe that will be the case and he will move on.”

Siegrist’s departure is best for all parties

It is clear that Siegrist had no future at Celtic. That was clear a while ago to be honest. Taking him off the payroll and developing some new talent in Sinisalo is positive for the club.

It would also be good for the player if he finds the right team. It may not even be in Romania, but Rodgers’ comments make it clear that he will not be at Lennoxtown for much longer.

Siegrist’s spell at Dundee United suggested that Celtic would get a solid option with his arrival, and that’s what happened. But if he wants to play football every week, that’s fine.
