Biden drops out of race, leaving Democrats in disarray

US President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the presidential race on Sunday evening, a move widely praised by his own party. Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the new Democratic presidential nominee. Harris expressed gratitude for Biden’s “guilty and patriotic act” and indicated that she intended to run for president.

The decision was widely supported by leading Democrats, including former President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary, who thanked Biden for his service and backed Harris. Other notable Democrats, such as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, praised Biden’s decision, calling him “a great president and a great legislative leader.”

Foreign leaders also reacted to Biden’s decision, with Israeli President Isaac Herzog thanking him for his “friendship and support for the Israeli people.” Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk acknowledged Biden’s “difficult decisions” that made Poland, the United States and the world safer and democracy stronger. Irish Foreign Minister Michael Martin expressed his admiration for Biden’s decision, calling him “an enduring friend of Ireland.”

Not all reactions were positive, however. Donald Trump, Biden’s Republican rival, criticized him, saying he would “go down in history as by far the worst president in the history of our country.” Trump also suggested that Harris would be easier to defeat than Biden. Republican leader Mike Johnson called on Biden to resign immediately, saying that if he was unfit to run for president, he was unfit to serve as president.

Biden’s withdrawal was seen as a response to mounting pressure from his own party and critics who questioned his fitness for office due to his age and recent achievements. The Democratic Party will now have to nominate a new presidential and vice presidential nominee during the Democratic National Party Convention from August 19-22.
