Ukrainian border guards foil attempted smuggling of consignment of collector coins

Date

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) A collection of valuable coins, some dating back to the 18th century, was found at the Krakivets checkpoint on the border with Poland. The bag was filled with what a minibus driver on his way to the Czech Republic claimed were children’s clothes.

This was reported by the Ukrainian Border Guard Service, Ukrinform reports.

According to the report, the oldest coin in the series was minted in 1748.

The driver claims he was only paid to transport the bag to the Czech Republic and was unaware of its valuable contents, the export of which is restricted.

Border guards seized the coins for further expert examination.

As Ukrinform previously reported, customs officials at the border with Romania prevented a violin with the inscription “Antonius Stradiuarius Cremomentis Faciebad Anno 1713” from being smuggled out of the country.

Illegal trade in cultural property is a criminal offense in Ukraine, punishable by up to seven years in prison.
