ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Sunday strongly condemned the attack by a mob of extremists on its consulate in Frankfurt, Germany, and the failure of German authorities to protect the sanctity and security of its consular mission premises.

The Foreign Ministry statement comes a day after a group of Afghan nationals vandalized and attacked the Pakistani consulate, throwing stones at the building and removing the country’s flag.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has summoned Germany’s top diplomat to lodge a strong protest against the attack by a mob of extremists on the Pakistani consulate in Frankfurt a day earlier.

According to reports, the Afghan nationals were given permission by the German authorities to protest peacefully, but they turned violent and threw stones at the consulate building, leading to increased tensions.

German police have detained two Afghan nationals and expect more arrests as they use video footage to identify more protesters.

The FO statement said that the responsibility for protecting the premises and ensuring the safety of diplomats falls under the host government, in accordance with the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

“We convey our strong protest to the German government and urge it to take immediate measures to fulfil its responsibilities under the Vienna Conventions,” the foreign ministry said.

Pakistan has also asked German authorities to take immediate steps to arrest and prosecute those involved in yesterday’s incident and hold accountable those responsible for the security lapses.

According to media reports, the situation has attracted significant attention in the international community, raising concerns about the diplomatic security of the installations.

However, authorities in Frankfurt have assured authorities that a thorough investigation will take place.

Several people have also been arrested and are being investigated after the video went viral.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has asked whether Afghans should be given shelter in Germany after the incident.

In a special chat with Geo News, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif called Afghans ungrateful and said Pakistan is already hosting 4 million Afghans.

Khawaja Asif said that Pakistan fought a war with Russia for Afghans and is now fighting terrorism.

The information minister said at a press conference on Saturday’s attack on the Pakistani consulate in Frankfurt, Germany, that the foreign ministry had registered a protest with German authorities.

“They have told them that they must ensure the security of the Pakistani mission and action must be taken against those responsible for the security lapses,” he added.

Tarar added that the chairman of the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) has been instructed to review the footage of the attack and ascertain whether Pakistani nationals were also involved or whether it was only one country that carried out the attack.

“This is unacceptable; we are wrapping the bodies of our martyrs in this flag,” the federal minister said, adding that Pakistan Army officers have become more martyrs than those in other countries.

Tarar said that if any Pakistani persons were involved, as the PTI founder was inciting people to violence, their identity cards and passports would be blocked and strict action would be taken.

“Khan Sahib will not be able to save them,” warned Tarar, noting that no matter how many cases are overturned or decided in the PTI’s favour, Imran will never be able to “prove his innocence”.
