Benfica chairman Rui Costa has given Manchester United fresh hope for the signing of Joao Neves, revealing that the wonderkid does not need to be sold due to his £101million buyout fee.

Neves, 19, is a long-term target for United, although the Red Devils face stiff competition from other European giants. Costa also confirmed that Benfica have already received a bid for the talented midfielder, believed to be from Paris Saint-Germain.

For much of the summer, it was claimed that Benfica were unwilling to sell the Portugal international, who made two appearances at Euro 2024, for less than his €120m (£101m) buyout fee. But Costa has now clarified those reports, suggesting that United and PSG could snap him up cheaper if their offers are suitable.

“I never said that Joao Neves would only leave for his release clause and that is why those claims are false,” the Portuguese legend explained, as quoted by A Bola. “What I can say regarding Joao Neves is that there is an offer on the table. It has been in the news in recent days, but I am not going to say how this proposal stands.”

Costa then elaborated on the unnamed bid, saying: “There is a proposal on the table that is being evaluated and discussed. But at the moment Joao Neves is still a Benfica player. It’s not that I want to hide the ins and outs, because I understand that Benfica fans want to know whether Joao will leave or not.

“But at the moment there are negotiations going on, so allow me to be reserved about this so that we can determine what is the best outcome for Benfica.”

With 75 first-team appearances for Benfica to his name, Neves is now a regular in his country’s international squad. Portugal manager Roberto Martinez believes ‘100 per cent’ the 19-year-old could play for a club like United, adding on the FIVE podcast: “Everything goes his way, the faster the game, the better the opponent, the better his decisions are.”
