David Foster and his wife Katharine McPhee snapped a stylish pair at the Fab Thirties event in Forte dei Marmi, Italy, on Sunday.

The famed Canadian music producer, 74 — who was recently criticized for calling Katharine, 40, “fat” in a resurfaced music video — looked handsome in a white shirt and black pants.

He carried a cream-colored tuxedo jacket in his hand and wore a stylish black bow tie to complete his look.

Katharine sparkled in a black sequined dress, which she paired with black strappy sandals.

She finished the outfit with a black belt that cinched in her waist, and her brunette locks were pulled into a chic ponytail.

At one point, David was seen bravely holding her arm as he helped her down the stairs.

The event was attended by several celebrities, including Kate Beckinsale and Shania Twain.

Katharine was seen inside interacting with Shania, 58.

The Canadian superstar glowed in a floral button-up dress.

David and Katharine’s outing comes after her fans reacted strongly to a social media video in which he called her “fat”.

The outrageous clip, which was first posted to TikTok in March 2023, is taken from a concert performance of the couple’s show in which Katharine recounts the first time she met her future husband when she appeared on the fifth season of American Idol in 2006.

The singer and actress, who finished second that season, said in a self-deprecating moment onstage in the concert clip that she was “a little chubby” when David first met her.

But David took things a step further when he looked at a photo of his wife – who had previously expressed skepticism about their 35-year age gap – from American Idol projected onto the screen behind his piano.

“Oh yeah, you were fat,” he said nonchalantly, prompting laughter from the audience.

“I was a little chubby, okay? Just young,” Katharine shot back, but many of his wife’s fans didn’t find David’s comment funny.

But a follow-up video from the prosecutor criticizing David’s statement in the original video received far more likes and sparked significantly more conversation on TikTok, with commenters seemingly unanimous in their strong disapproval of David.

“This broke my heart,” another person shared. “This beautiful girl was NEVER fat. You don’t call your wife fat. Jokingly or seriously.”

“Oh my god I can’t believe he said that????” added another stunned user.

While a few users claimed David was joking, most didn’t seem to care.

“These comments are so hurtful. Hearing them from anyone, let alone your partner. No one should have to comment on someone’s body, whether it’s ‘joking’ or not,” one person wrote.

Several people wondered if David could say worse things in private if he insulted his wife in public.

In the clip, she describes her first meeting with David on American Idol, more than a decade before they started dating, when she said she was “a little chubby,” to which he replied, “Oh yeah, you were fat”; seen in 2005

“If he can say that in public imagine the insensitive (sic) comments he makes in private. Yolanda’s comments make some sense now,” one wrote, referring to the songwriter’s ex-wife, Yolanda Hadid.

Another added: ‘That was horrible. If he can say that on stage, what does he say at home?’

“That was horrible of him!” another user agreed.

Several users cited Katharine’s previously mentioned battle with eating disorders as context for why they found her husband’s comment so hurtful.

In 2006, shortly after wrapping her stint on American Idol, she revealed that she had suffered from bulimia in the past.

However, after winning a role on the reality series, she decided to seek treatment for the condition.

That wasn’t the end of her eating disorder struggles, though. While pregnant with her and David’s first child together — Rennie David, now three — Katharine struggled with new eating issues.

She told Dr. Berlin’s Informed Pregnancy Podcast that she worried that the intense hunger and cravings she began experiencing — a normal experience for many pregnant women — could be the same urge to binge eat she felt during her most intense battle with bulimia.

However, Katharine said she went back to the same psychiatrist she had during her American Idol days, who told her that it’s common for women who have bulimia problems to relapse when they get pregnant.

Despite meeting on season five of American Idol, they didn’t start dating until 2017. They married in 2019 and welcomed a son, three-year-old Rennie David, in 2021.

Although some viewers of the clip on social media suggested that David was joking, no one seemed to react, as it’s possible that the line was planned in advance.

It’s unclear whether Katharine or David ever repeated the discussion about her weight on another show, but it’s not uncommon for acts to seemingly plan or script jokes off the cuff to make interactions sound more natural and avoid awkward moments.

Although they first met on American Idol, Katharine didn’t start dating until 2017.

The lovebirds got married in 2019 and welcomed Rennie David in February 2021.
