Borges beats Nadal to win first title in Bastad

Portuguese number 1 Nuno Borges won his first title on Sunday in Bastad, Sweden, by beating legendary Spaniard Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-2.

In a match that lasted one hour and 28 minutes, Borges hit two aces, won 67 percent of his first serve points and broke the Mallorcan five times.

Borges has never played against Nadal on Tour and will rise to No. 42 in the world rankings when the latest rankings are released.

The 27-year-old entered this week with a win/loss record of 13-17.

Nadal, who was aiming for his 93rd career title, looked visibly tired during the final, with the 38-year-old winning two tough three-set encounters in both the semi-finals and quarter-finals.

The Spaniard is in 161st place on Monday.

EFG SWISS OPEN GSTAAD—Gstaad, Switzerland

Sixth-seeded and former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini won his ninth career title on Sunday in Gstaad, Switzerland, beating Frenchman Quentin Halys 6-3, 6-1.

Berrettini went on to win his second title of the season, hitting an ace, winning 90 percent of his first serve points and scoring 22 game-winning goals in the 59-minute match.

Berrettini, who has a 16-5 record this season, climbs to No. 50 in the world rankings on Monday. The Italian is even ranked No. 6 in the world.

Halys, looking to win his first career title, defeated No. 5 Jan-Lennard Struff in the semi-finals. The 28-year-old climbs to No. 125 on the computer on Monday.

Hamburg Open—Hamburg, Germany

Frenchman Arthur Fils won the biggest title of his career on Sunday in Hamburg, Germany, by beating reigning champion Alexander Zverev 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(1).

Thanks to his quick footwork and skills on the court, Fils scored 41 winning shots, broke his serve once and won 78 percent of his points and goals during the match that lasted three hours and 33 minutes.

Fils claimed his first victory over Zverev in three meetings and also won the biggest title of his career. The 20-year-old won his first title in Lyon, France in 2023.

Fils climbs to 20th place on Monday and Zverev remains at 4th place in the world.
