Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo has travelled to Finland to undergo surgery on a hamstring injury.

The La Blaugrana central defender suffered the injury earlier this month during the international break with Uruguay at the Copa America.

The initial prognosis of his national team and his return to Barcelona was not positive, with a possible absence of four months being considered.

Previous reports indicated that the injury could not be cured with a rest, rehabilitation and recovery plan. Surgery was suggested, which would mean a long period of incapacity.

According to the latest update from Marca, Araujo has flown to Finland for the procedure, with Barcelona’s medical staff working with surgeon Lasse Lempainen.

If Araujo remains absent for the proposed period, Barcelona could receive around €2.5 million in FIFA compensation, although transfer plans could still change.

Despite Araujo focusing on other areas of the squad, a long absence from the squad could mean a change, with Inigo Martinez’s extension falling through.
