Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton involved in controversial crash during Hungarian Grand Prix

The Hungarian Grand Prix was full of wild moments, but the scene that really matters comes when Red Bull driver Max Verstappen and Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton are involved in a collision during a race for the final podium spot.

Verstappen tried to overtake Hamilton on track, but Hamilton’s right front tire collided with Verstappen’s left rear tire. This caused the Red Bull driver’s rear to jump into the air, creating a dramatic scene on track. This slowed Verstappen down, but he was not eliminated from the race.

Hamilton finished third, his 200th podium finish, while Verstappen failed to make the podium and settled for fifth place.

The crash is currently under investigation by the FIA.

The irony of the situation is that Verstappen launched a fiery tirade at the start of Sunday’s race about McLaren driver Oscar Piastri, who won his first Formula 1 race on Sunday, and Lando Norris who nearly collided in the first corner of the race.

“Okay, then you can just run people off the track?” Verstappen was heard saying to his team on the radio. “You can tell the FIA that we’re going to race like this from now on! Just run people off the road!”

Verstappen and Hamilton have a history of controversial finishes at F1 races, the most notable of which came at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix when the FIA wrongly allowed a final-lap restart. Verstappen passed Hamilton on that lap, giving the Red Bull driver his first championship. Hamilton has said he was “robbed” of the championship.
