Ukrainian civilians injured in Russian drone and shelling attacks as Russia claims gains in the east

Kiev – Russian strikes wounded at least five people in Ukraine on Sunday, local officials said, as the two countries traded drone, missile and shell fire. Along the front line in the east, Russia said it had taken control of two villages, one in the Kharkiv region and one in the Luhansk region.

Three people were wounded by Russian drone strikes in the partially occupied Kherson region of southern Ukraine, local officials said early Sunday. In the northeast of the country, officials in the Kharkiv region said two people were injured when a village was hit by Russian shells.

On Sunday night, Ukrainian air defense intercepted 35 of 39 drones launched by Russia, air force commander Mykola Oleschuk said. In addition, Russia launched three ballistic missiles and two guided air missiles, which did not reach their targets, he said.

The Russian Defense Ministry said on Sunday that its forces had taken control of two villages: Pishchane Nizhne in the Kharkiv region and Andriivka, sometimes called Rozivka, in the Luhansk region. Kiev did not comment.

Officials in the northern Sumy region said on Sunday that Russia had launched a missile attack on “critical infrastructure facilities” in the town of Shostka. The town’s Mayor Mykola Noha specified that “two heating facilities” had been destroyed and urged residents to conserve electricity and stock up on water.

Few changes have been reported along the 1,000-kilometer frontline, where a recent Kremlin advance in eastern and northeastern Ukraine has yielded only minor gains. Both sides in the war are focused on infrastructure targets, trying to limit each other’s ability to fight in a war that has now lasted three years.

Russian air defense systems destroyed eight drones overnight over the Belgorod region and the Black Sea, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

Russian air defenses also shot down two long-range ATACMS missiles in the skies over the Kherson region, en route to Russian-annexed Crimea, Russian-installed Kherson Governor Vladimir Saldo said.

Nine people were wounded in shelling in the town of Shebekino in Russia’s Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, the previous day, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Sunday morning.
