Beloved cruise captain resigns from Carnival Group/P&O Cruises to join Disney

Wesley Dunlop, one of the most popular cruise captains among British guests, has announced that he is leaving Carnival Group and P&O Cruises and will instead join Disney Cruise Line.

Captain Wesley Dunlop

Dunlop has been part of Carnival Group since April 2016 and has helmed several ships, the most recent being Iona.

He confirmed that he would make one final voyage as captain of the Iona in August to complete the ship’s season in Norway and then be done with it.

He will join Disney Cruise Line in 2025. It has not yet been confirmed whether he will take charge of one of the new cruise ships, such as Disney Treasure, or whether he will remain based in the UK and lead the 2025 UK season for Disney Fantasy.

Several captains and other high-ranking officers are openly present on social media and have built up a reputation as ‘fan favourites’ due to their cheerful nature. Dunlop is certainly a popular figure.

His announcement on social media earned him many well wishes, as he was described by some guests as the “favourite captain”. Several guests called it a great loss for P&O that he would be leaving.
