Manchester United could turn to a Barcelona target if they fail to land Manuel Ugarte.

The Red Devils’ pursuit of the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder is reportedly at an advanced stage, with personal terms reportedly agreed. However, Ugarte said earlier this year that he wanted to stay in the French capital, so the completion of the transfer cannot yet be assumed.

If a deal falls through, United could turn to Spanish Euro 2024 hero Martin Zubimendi, who is also in demand at Barcelona. The Real Sociedad star played second fiddle to Fabian Ruiz and Rodri throughout the tournament, but replaced the latter, who was injured, at half-time in the final against England.

Barca manager Xavi has made no secret of his respect for Zubimendi, calling him an “extraordinary defensive midfielder”.

“I really like Real Sociedad,” Xavi said in May. “They reflect a bit of our style of play. Zubimendi is an extraordinary defensive midfielder, he understands the model we like at Barca, he dominates with and without the ball.”

However, Zubimendi’s £50million release fee has proven to be a stumbling block for the Catalan giants, opening the door for United to offer the 25-year-old the sweetener of his preferred shirt number. Zubimendi has traditionally worn numbers three and four during his career, both of which are currently vacant.

Sofyan Amrabat wore the number 4 shirt last season and could return as Ten Hag is in talks with Dan Ashworth about making his loan permanent. The number 3 shirt has been empty since Eric Bailly left the club.

Interestingly, United’s main target Ugarte is also keen on the number 4 shirt and currently wears it for PSG. He is seen as Ten Hag’s number 1 option with former Arsenal target Zubimendi an alternative if a deal cannot be reached.

The Spaniard was asked about his future during the European Championship and told El Diario Vasco: “Where am I going to play next season? I’m going to play for Real Sociedad. I have a contract with Real Sociedad and that’s where I feel most comfortable.”

That stance could be tested, however, if United activate his release clause. Further moves could be dependent on spending, given the club’s limited summer transfer budget. United have already spent more than £85m on deals for Joshia Zirkzee and Leny Yoro, although they have recouped some of that outlay by selling Mason Greenwood to Marseille.
