F1 2024 Hungarian GP LIVE: Race start time today, updates and times as Lando Norris starts on pole position

Lewis Hamilton celebrates F1 victory with crowd surfing at Silverstone

This weekend, Formula 1 returns to a favourite circuit as the Hungaroring Circuit in Budapest hosts the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton took his first victory in 31 months at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, holding off a late charge from Max Verstappen to take his ninth home race victory.

Despite this, Verstappen has an 84-point lead in the Formula 1 world championship halfway through the season, with Lando Norris in second place, and he is aiming for another victory after coming close to winning on a couple of occasions in recent weeks.

Mercedes, meanwhile, are aiming for a third straight victory this weekend after George Russell’s win in Austria, while Ferrari will be hoping to return to form after a nail-biting triple-header in which Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz struggled for pace. Verstappen won last year’s race in Budapest by a comfortable margin.

Christian Horner is overtaken on the grid by Martin Brundle…

“Yesterday was a terrible day for Checo, but the best way to deal with it is today on track,” said the Red Bull team boss. “He’s in good spirits, so hopefully he’ll have a good day. The team did a great job tonight and the best reward they can get is some points today. We’re going to try.”

PREVIEW: How the 2024 Formula 1 season came to life with four teams in contention for the Hungarian GP

It’s Saturday night in Bahrain, March 2024. Away from the frenzy of paddock gossip and the Red Bull soap opera, the world champions had blown away the field – again – on their more comfortable race track. Max Verstappen stormed home in first place, 22 seconds ahead of team-mate Sergio Perez. Carlos Sainz, in third, was 25 seconds ahead of Verstappen, with Charles Leclerc 39 seconds behind him in fourth.

Cheeks puffed out, faces turned somber. After a 2023 campaign in which Red Bull won 21 of 22 races, were we really in for another 10 months of ultra-dominance? Would more eyes be averted for lack of competitive action at the front? Could Verstappen possibly become the first driver ever to win every race in a season?

The answer to all of the above, halfway through this record-breaking 24-race campaign, is a reassuring no. After two years, the others have finally got their act together.

COMMENTARY: Why Ralf Schumacher’s coming out as gay shows the situation in Formula 1 is changing – finally

In recent years, the rise in LGBTQ+ representation in the sport – whether it’s team personnel, F1 staff or members of the media – has seen F1 finally come into step with the modern age. Before, the sport’s overwhelming machismo would have made Sunday night’s announcement far less palatable to some.

“I hope I can pass Ferrari, in terms of real speed McLaren is one or two tenths ahead of us. I think it will be tough. We can’t fight for a win in these conditions.”

Martin Brundle on Ralf Schumacher coming out as gay last weekend:

“It’s important, we want to be inclusive,” Brundle said Sky Sport.

“I wish Ralf and Etienne all the best in health and happiness. I’ve been in the paddock for a long time, there are openly gay people in the paddock. I’ve never felt a stigma, but I wouldn’t, would I?

“It’s interesting, it’s something important, Ralf has done something powerful. It may be a naive utopia on my part, but I can’t wait for the day when someone’s sexuality, religion, gender is no longer an issue.”
