West Ham could make a £17million bid for the Belgium international as early as tomorrow

It appears that West Ham United are on the verge of making a formal bid for a highly talented Belgian attacker.

However, you could argue that the Hammers don’t actually need him, as strange as that may sound.

West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui has already signed three new players and has been linked with many more, with Fikayo Tomori the latest name to emerge as a target for the Hammers.

Lopetegui knows better than anyone that he needs to bring four more new players to the London Stadium this summer if he is to make real progress at the club.

The Hammers boss has a transfer budget of around £90m to spend this summer, excluding player sales, so he will have to be frugal with his recruitment.

There are certainly bargains to be found on the transfer market this summer.

But the latest name linked with a move to West Ham isn’t exactly sparking interest…

West Ham could make a bid for Alexis Saelemaekers

With just under four weeks left before the new Premier League season kicks off, Lopetegui is keen to sign a few more players.

His need for a new striker, a central midfielder and an additional central defender has already been well documented.

However, it looks like West Ham’s next signing could be a right winger again…

According to a report from Calcio Mercato, the Hammers have firmly set their sights on Alexis Saelemaekers and we could make a £17million bid for the AC Milan star as early as tomorrow.

Interestingly, the East London club were heavily linked with signing the 26-year-old last summer.

But I’m not sure we really need him.

Although the Belgium international can play as a left winger, his natural position is on the right wing – an area where we are already incredibly strong.

His record isn’t great either. He scored just four goals and added three assists in 32 games last season, and has only 16 goals and 28 assists in 242 career outings.

Those numbers don’t inspire me one bit. Also, I really think Lopetegui should prioritize adding a left winger, rather than another right winger.

The Spaniard needs to bring in someone to replace Said Benrahma, and Alexis Saelemaekers is simply not the right man for the job in my opinion.

There are plenty of better options available to West Ham this summer, with the likes of Jota Silva, Steven Bergwijn and Reiss Nelson to name a few.
