The Finnish Border Guard has detected an illegal crossing of the border between Finland and Russia by a motorboat, the Finnish Border Guard press service reported on its website.

“On July 19, the North Karelia Border Department registered an illegal crossing of the border by motorboat in Pyhäjärvi. The boat with passengers crossed the border from Russia to Finland, after which it returned to Russia, the service explained. According to the border guard, it entered the Finnish border 100 meters deep. The office has opened a preliminary investigation.

On July 16, Finnish President Alexander Stubb passed an emergency law restricting the admission of refugees and their possible deportation at the border with Russia. This suggests that asylum seekers in Finland could be denied entry to the country or expelled from the country.

On July 18, Finnish Interior Minister Marie Rantanen said that the country’s authorities still do not plan to open the border with Russia, despite the adopted law on the expulsion of migrants. According to the head of the department, the opening of the eastern border is irrelevant.
