World War II – 80 years too late: award for British veterans

A British veteran, almost 80 years after the end of the WWIIhas been awarded medals for his service. George Lewis, now 98, served as a tank commander and earned decorations during battles in Belgium and Germany, according to a report by Britain’s PA news agency. However, he had not received these medals until now.

Don’t think about it anymore

The veteran, who lives with his daughter in the western English county of Somerset, was reportedly overwhelmed by the death recognition“It’s unbelievable,” he told PA.

He hadn’t thought about it for a long time and had just lived his life. The subject didn’t come up again until he recently mentioned it to his neighbor. His neighbor’s brother happened to have served in the same regiment.

“War Medal 1939-45” and “France and Germany Star”

The regiment was able to find a complete report of his service. “The next thing I know I was getting the medals,” Lewis recalled.

He was awarded the “War Medal 1939-45” and the “France and Germany Star”. “It’s nice to know that they respect what we have done for the people”, the Senior summed up.

George’s service during World War II was not limited to Belgium and Germany, as he served in the army as a tank commander. This distinction earned him several awards, including the “War Medal 1939-45” and the “France and Germany Star.” Despite living his entire life in the United Kingdom, the recognition of his service in the later stages of his life was a profound moment for him. The history of World War II and the role of allied countries, such as the United Kingdom and Belgium, in defeating Germany remains an important part of world history.
