Pakistan condemns ‘attack’ on consulate by Afghan nationals in Germany

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Sunday “strongly condemning” the attack by a group of Afghan nationals on the consulate in Frankfurt, Germany, the day before.

The statement also criticised German authorities for their “failure” to prevent the incident.

“According to the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, it is the responsibility of the host government to protect the inviolability of consular premises and ensure the safety of diplomats,” the ministry said.

A video circulating on social media shows a group of individuals draped in flags of the former Afghan government. The footage also shows them pulling down the Pakistani flag that had been hoisted in the consulate’s garden.

“We urge the German government to take immediate measures to fulfil its responsibilities under the Vienna Convention and ensure the safety of Pakistan’s diplomatic missions and personnel in Germany,” the ministry added.

The incident is believed to be linked to the killing of a member of the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) in an attack in Islamabad. Sources indicated that the attackers were pro-PTM supporters.

The attack has increased tensions and underscored the need for tighter security measures for diplomatic missions abroad.
