Marseille near deal to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Tottenham

Marseille have reached an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur over the transfer fee of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The French club will pay their English club a total of €20 million (£16.8 million) to secure the services of the Denmark international.

If all goes to plan, the 28-year-old will leave the Premier League after eight seasons in the English top division.

Hojbjerg left Southampton for Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2020, having previously spent four years at the south coast club after joining from Bayern Munich.

He has one year left on his current contract with Spurs and the club were prepared to approve his departure if the right offer came in. Atletico Madrid were also said to be interested.

Hojbjerg has been a regular at Spurs, but with head coach Ange Postecoglou preferring Pape Matar Sarr alongside Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur, Spurs have a good central midfield position.

He was a near-permanent presence in the Spurs team two seasons ago, but his playing time has been limited since then. Despite making 36 Premier League appearances last campaign, most of those were cameo appearances from the bench.

Tottenham Hotspur are preparing for the upcoming season and will play their first two Premier League games against promoted clubs Leicester City and Everton in August.
