Congress ‘gang’ remained silent spectators to economic destruction: Rajeev Chandrasekhar

New Delhi, July 21 Former minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Sunday slammed the UPA government, saying the ‘bunch’ of incompetent Congress people were just silent spectators to the economic destruction of the country.

“Everyone in the government during Cong/UPA #LostDecade from Chidambaram to “CEA” Basu to “Gov” Rajan is living in the hope that people have forgotten and Indians have developed collective amnesia. This gang was at best inept/incompetent or at worst mute/active bystanders to cronyism, corruption & economic destruction unprecedented in Indian history,” the former Union minister wrote to X while responding to allegations of ‘lopsided inflation’ by Kaushik Basu, who was Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) during the UPA government.

“He won’t respond @dravirmani. UPA relics like @kaushikcbasu are spouting some nonsense like ‘lopsided inflation’ and kicking,” wrote former Rajeev Chandrasekhar while attacking the UPA government.

Kaushik Basu had earlier said that India is now facing ‘skewed inflation’.

“This cannot be solved by monetary policy alone. Sector-specific interventions are needed. The budget is going to be crucial. The problem is to solve a problem, we have to acknowledge that there is one. But do we have the courage to do that?” wrote Basu on X.

Responding to Basu, Niti Ayog member Arvind Virmani said it would be highly appreciated if a comparative analysis of the current inflation rate with the inflation during your tenure as CEA (2010-12) and the following year was done to identify lags.

Former Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar has again attacked the UPA government for the party’s economic failure. He said that even an economic layman will recognise the transformation and strength of our economy after the troughs of 2013-14 and the BJP’s resilience and growth post-Covid as a result.

“Even a novice, but not the exaggerated ‘economist’ reliefs of Congress’ past,” the former secretary of state said.

India is the fastest growing economy in the world. Its economic growth in the fiscal year 2023-24 was 8.2 percent.

It is expected to grow at 7.2 per cent in the current fiscal. At the same time, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) estimates that the inflation rate will average 4.5 per cent in the fiscal year 2024-25.
