Tottenham transfer news: 28-year-old ‘on verge’ of departure after £11.8m deal agreed

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is reportedly set to leave the Lilywhites for French giants Marseille in a £11.8million deal.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is reportedly close to signing for the Ligue 1 giants Marseilleending a four-year stay in North London.

The Denmark international fitted right into the Lilywhites’ engine room when he joined from Southampton in the summer of 2020, leaving St Mary’s for a transfer fee of £14million.

Hojbjerg immediately became a mainstay for Jose Mourinhoappearing in all 38 matches in the 2020-21 Premier League season, and Antonio Conte had the same amount of confidence in him.

However, the 28-year-old has fallen down the pecking order below Ange Postecoglouwho has breathed new life into Yves Bissouma‘s Spurs career, while also preferring Pope Sarr And Rodrigo Bentancur in the midst.

Hojbjerg made 39 appearances in all competitions last season, 36 of which were in the Premier League, but he started just eight games in the top division, coming on as a substitute in the other 28.

Hojbjerg ‘agrees’ terms for Marseille transfer

Hojbjerg is in the final year of his contract at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and was heavily linked with a move to Serie A in January. However, he rejected interest from Juventus and joined Tottenham.

However, with no contract extension in the pipeline, Postecoglou is open to the Danish international leaving the club this summer rather than risk losing him for nothing at the end of next season.

According to Fabrizio RomanoLigue 1 powerhouse Marseille are set to bring Hojbjerg to Ligue 1 with the midfielder already having given the green light for a move to the Orange Velodrome.

Spurs and Marseille are currently discussing the final details of a transfer fee, which were ‘close to being finalised’ on Saturday night and Romano added in an update that an agreement has been reached on a transfer fee that could rise to €14m.

Hojbjerg leaves Tottenham with a record of 10 goals and 16 assists in 184 games in all competitions. He started all four of Denmark’s matches at Euro 2024, as the Scandinavians reached the last 16.

Hojbjerg adds to Tottenham’s summer exodus

The 28-year-old becomes the latest in a long line of players to leave Tottenham this summer, a list that includes: Eric Dier, Ivan Perisic, Ryan Sessegnon, Japhet Tanganga, Tanguy Ndombele And Joe Rodon.

More players are expected to follow Hojbjerg in the coming weeks, including fellow midfielders Olivier Skipp And Giovanni Lo Celsoneither of which appear in Postecoglou’s future plans.

Sergio Reguilon, Richarlison, Emerson Royal, Bryan Gil And Djed Spence also set to be sacked, but the latter has potentially revived his Tottenham career with some strong pre-season performances.

Spence scored one and set up the second in the 5-1 win over Hearts in midweek and he was also impressive in the 2-0 win over Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.

Postecoglou’s team are now preparing for a tour of Asia, where they will face Bayern Munich, Vissel Kobe and Team K League. On August 10, they will also play a match against the German giants in North London.
