Springboks dominate Portugal with ten matches in Bloem!

The Springboks convincingly defeated Portugal 64-21 in Bloemfontein, a testament to the strength and potential of South African rugby.

Bloemfontein, South Africa (July 21, 2024) – Our Springboks continue to make South Africa immensely proud by demonstrating their skill and spirit on the rugby field.

On a cold evening in the Free State, the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein was the scene of a spectacular rugby match. The Springboks closed out the Castle Lager Incoming Series with a convincing 64-21 victory over Portugal, much to the delight of a crowd of 42,626 fans.

From the rousing rendition of the national anthem to the final whistle, the atmosphere was electric. Portugal, facing the Boks for the first time, proved they are a rising force in rugby by scoring three commendable tries. The match was not only a victory for the Springboks, but a celebration of rugby itself.

The night was particularly memorable for the seven Springboks making their Test debuts. Four of them marked the occasion by scoring tries, making their first Test caps unforgettable. Despite a dramatic start with Andre Esterhuizen’s early red card, the Boks quickly regained their composure. Portugal took an early lead when Jose Paiva dos Santos scored from deep inside their own half, but the Springboks responded with force. Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Phepsi Buthelezi and Kurt-Lee Arendse each crossed the try line to give the Boks the lead. Ben-Jason Dixon added another debut try and Lukhanyo Am’s brilliant play extended the lead.

The second half was a showcase of the Springboks’ attacking flair. Makazole Mapimpi, returning from a sin-bin, scored twice in quick succession, demonstrating his exceptional speed and agility. New signing Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu impressed with his play and conversions, contributing significantly to the score.

The Bok bench added a fresh energy, with Morne van den Berg making his debut and Andre-Hugo Venter and Quan Horn also scoring in their first Test appearances. Despite a determined effort from Portugal, who added two more tries, the Springboks’ dominance was clear.

The final moments saw Mapimpi complete his hat-trick, sealing the match with a flourish. As the final whistle blew, the crowd erupted in celebration, proud of their team’s achievement. Coach Rassie Erasmus’ decision to introduce new talent paid off and promised a bright future for South African rugby.
