Warsaw (Poland), July 21 (ANI): Reigning Asian Games champions Annu Rani (women’s javelin) and Rajesh Ramesh (men’s 400m) won their respective events while Jyothi Yarraji emerged victorious in the qualifications of the Warszawskie Zawody Lekkoatletyczne 2024 athletics meet in Poland on Saturday.

Only two competitors competed in the women’s javelin event in Warsaw. Annu, 31, threw 58.70 meters in her fifth attempt, easily beating Poland’s Amelia Bielak’s best effort of 35.35 meters to emerge victorious, according to Olympics.com.

Annu, an eight-time national champion, also holds the national women’s javelin throw record with an attempt of 63.82 meters at the 2022 Indian Open Javelin Throw Competition. Her best throw this year was 60.68 meters in Germany two months ago, six meters shy of Colombian athlete Flor Ruiz, who recorded the world’s best throw of 66.70 meters.

Yarraji meanwhile ran a time of 13.29 seconds, which was faster than the women’s 100m hurdles at the qualifying events in Warsaw, but she did not run in the final.

In May this year, Yarraji, the reigning Asian champion, equalled her national record in the 100m hurdles of 12.78 seconds.

Yarraji also competed in the women’s 200 metres in Warsaw, running a time of 23.53 to finish second behind compatriot Kiran Pahal, who ran a time of 23.33.

Indian runner Rajesh Ramesh, 25, led the field in the men’s 400 metres with a season-best time of 45.54. Compatriot Muhammed Ajmal was third with 45.69, while national 400 metres record holder Muhammed Anas Yahiya (45.93) was fourth.

Amoj Jacob (46.00), Mijo Chacko Kurian (46.52) and Santhosh Kumar Tamilarasan (46.68) finished fifth, seventh and eighth respectively.

Meanwhile, in the women’s 400m, Jyothika Sri Dandi clocked 52.32 to finish first. India’s Vithya Ramraj (53.18), Subha Venkatesan (53.19), Prachi (53.97) and MR Poovamma (53.97) occupied positions three to six.

All the Indian athletes who competed in Warsaw will compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics. The group has been training at the Olympic Sports Centre in Spala, Poland, ahead of the upcoming Summer Games.

The 29-member Indian athletics team, including reigning Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra, is expected to assemble in Paris on July 28. The athletics events of the 30th Summer Olympics begin four days later on August 1. (ANI)
