Diana Taurasi has no parenting advice for teammate Brittney Griner

Phoenix Mercury’s Brittney Griner welcomed a son with wife Cherelle Griner on July 8.

Griner said ahead of the WNBA All-Star game at the Footprint Center that her son is doing very well.

“He’s doing great. He’s doing really well,” Griner said.

Griner is about to leave her son. As part of the Olympic team, she will travel to London next week for the team’s only practice match. Team USA will face Germany on Tuesday, July 23.

“It’s going to be tough to leave him now. But you know, he’ll figure it out later,” Griner said. “He’s definitely going to be in a sports house.”

Her Mercury and Team USA teammate Taurasi is married to former teammate Penny Taylor. They have two children together, which gives her enough credibility to offer new parent Griner some welcome advice. But when asked what she would tell Griner, Taurasi said her longtime teammate doesn’t need any help.

“She doesn’t need advice,” Taurasi said ahead of tonight’s game. “BG is the kindest, warmhearted, gentle, caring person I’ve ever met. I think that’s why everywhere she goes, you see the love and admiration for her, because that’s who she is.”

“Besides being the best post player in the world and the most dominant player in our league, she’s the best teammate and the best friend you could have.”

Griner said the All-Star weekend in Phoenix has been a blessing in disguise. While the events, crowds and attention could have been overwhelming for the new parent, it has actually brought welcome relief. Griner said her son is “surrounded by all the family that’s in town.”

“It’s perfect timing to have everyone here,” she said.

With the upcoming match against Germany and today’s All-Star game marking their only meeting before the Olympic pool play, both participants — Team USA and Team WNBA — are taking the event seriously.

“I think we see it as a preparation for what’s going to happen in Paris. Personally, I know the end is much closer than the beginning,” Taurasi said. “So I just tried to enjoy every moment in the locker room, in training, on the bus and tonight will be no different.”

The WNBA All-Star Game begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Footprint Center
