Auger-Aliassime loses to Berrettini in quarterfinals in Gstaad

Quebecer Félix Auger-Aliassime lost in the quarterfinals of the Gstaad Tennis Open in Switzerland on Friday, after Italy’s Matteo Berrettini defeated him 7-6 (7), 7-6 (2).

Sixth-seeded Berrettini won his fifth career win in seven matches against No. 3 Auger-Aliassime, this time taking 2 hours and 10 minutes to finish off his rival.

In the next round, Berrettini will face top-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas, who defeated Italian Fabio Fognini 6-4, 6-3. In the other semi-final, German Jan-Lennard Struff will face Frenchman Quentin Halys.

Neither Auger-Aliassime nor Berrettini managed to make a break during their duel, with both players not even allowing their rival a break point in the second set.

Berrettini won the first five points of the second-set tiebreak and sealed the deal four points later with his second match point.

Auger-Aliassime will now travel to Paris for the Olympic Games. The draw for the clay-court tournament at Roland Garros is scheduled for July 25.
