Forest Fires: Artificial Intelligence Based System to Tackle Forest Fires | Pune News

Pune: The forest department has reiterated its demand of around Rs 100 crore from the state government to procure scientific equipment and upgrade facilities to scale up forest fire management in Maharashtra. “Till now, guards have been using wind blowers in large fires,” said Ajay Patil, central president of the Maharashtra Forest Guards and Foresters’ Sanghatana. The department had earlier also sought around Rs 100 crore from the state to procure equipment, protective gear and vehicles, besides setting up advanced technological tools such as artificial intelligence, to tackle forest fires. The same demand was discussed at a meeting on Friday attended by Patil, principal chief conservator of forests – Maharashtra forest department Shailesh Tembhurnikar, among others. “In Junnar, an AI-based conflict mitigation system has captured some of the leopard sightings. We were approached by an agency specialising in AI for forest fire mitigation and decided to go ahead with it. The AI system will have sensors to detect forest fires and will alert the officers on the ground with the exact location using GPS and time for faster action,” Tembhurnikar told TOI. The system will use pan-tilt cameras that will provide 360° surveillance of different locations. Tembhurnikar said, “We have successfully seen a reduction in fire incidents and land area burnt in the last five years.”
