Scotland beat Chile – Scotland beat Chile

MATCH REPORT: Fullback Kyle Rowe scored his first two caps as the experimental Scotland team recovered from a difficult start in sunny Santiago to break the resolve of a plucky Chile and win 52-11.

Jamie Dobie also scored a double, while substitute Matt Currie scored his first international try to help Gregor Townsend’s side make it three wins from three on their mid-year tour of America.

Strikers Ewan Johnson, Nathan McBeth and Will Hurd all got their first starts for Scotland, while the leading trio of Jamie Ritchie, Sione Tuipulotu and Kyle Steyn – who moved from his usual position on the wing to midfield – were the only players to start with more than 10 caps to their name.

The tourists struggled in the early stages and trailed at the end of the first quarter, after the passionate Chileans took the lead in the 11th minute through a penalty from Santiago Videla.

Scotland began to slowly but surely come into the game and took the lead in the 22nd minute when striker Josh Bayliss showed his mettle to fire the ball over from close range, with Ben Healy adding an extra goal.

Shortly afterwards, the home side reduced the deficit to one point thanks to a penalty from Tomas Salas, but in the closing stages of the first half the Scots showed their superiority.

Just before the half-hour mark, Rowe cut in from the left to score Scotland’s first try, but the visitors were fortunate that the officials did not treat Tuipulotu’s pass in the run-up to goal as forward. Healy scored.

Dobie – playing on the wing rather than his usual scrum-half position – then rounded off the Scots’ third try in the 35th minute after a superb pass down the right from Healy, who again took the lead off the tee.

Hooker Dylan Richardson nearly scored in the 39th minute but was stopped on the goal line.

Dobie enjoyed another easy finish five minutes after the break when the Scots, following a line-out on the left, clinically worked the ball through hands down the right, with Rowe laying the ball on a plate for his Glasgow colleague to leap over. Healy was wide with his conversion from the side on the right.

Chile conceded another goal in the 50th minute when substitute Diego Escobar forced his way through Gus Warr and Arron Reed following a maul, but Salas’ attempted conversion went just wide.

Edinburgh defender Currie ran clear for his first Scotland try in the 58th minute, with substitute Adam Hastings converting the ball.

Rowe then raced home for his second of the night in the 65th minute after a clever Scottish move from left to right, while Escobar was in the penalty box after a cynical move.

Richardson made it a decisive goal in the 73rd minute, but Steyn fired home to give the match a comfortable win with eight tries in what was almost the final stages of the game.
