Ghanaian Paralympic team flees on arrival in Norway for competition, one dead, one arrested, nine others on the run

Suspected members of the Ghanaian paracycling team have fled to other Schengen countries after arriving in Norway earlier this year to prepare for the Fjordkraft Bergen City Marathon.

The team of 11 members was unable to register and participate in the competition, which was scheduled to take place in Norway at the end of April.

According to a document released by the National Security Authority on July 3, 2024 and seen by Sportsworldghana.com, one of the team members, Nana Antwi, was already arrested and detained by Norwegian security officials in late April after she attempted to leave for Sweden.

The document also reveals that George Gyamfi Gyasi, the team’s coach, collapsed and was admitted to Oslo University Hospital, where he sadly passed away on May 17, 2024.

In an effort to locate the missing team members, the Norwegian Embassy in Accra has issued alerts to other Schengen and Western diplomatic missions in Accra to assist in the arrest and repatriation of the team members. The search is currently underway.

The National Paralympic Committee (NPC) has distanced itself from the group, stating that the 11-member team is not part of the committee.

As a result, the NPC has indefinitely suspended Mr Theodore Mawuli Viwotor, Mr Ernest Yaw Ayisi and the Ernestay Foundation for their involvement in the matter.
