Paralympic team ‘disappears’ after arriving in Norway for marathon: ‘Ghana is not a real place’

A scandal has rocked the Ghanaian sports industry after it emerged that a supposed Paralympic team representing the nation had fled upon arrival in Norway.

The 11-member contingent was scheduled to take part in the Fjordkraft Bergen City Marathon in Oslo on April 27.

However, they ‘disappeared’ shortly after arriving in the Scandinavian country.

Ghanaian ‘Paralympic’ team flees after arriving in Norway

According to a letter from Ghanaian Minister of National Security Albert Kan-Dapaah, nine members of the so-called Paralympic team are on the run. They are accused of impersonation, Myjoyonline reported.

When did they arrive in Norway?

The letter further reveals that the athletes arrived in Oslo for the marathon on April 25.

How could the ‘Paralympic’ team escape?

However, it was discovered that the team had not registered for the competition, which was scheduled to take place two days after their arrival.

One of the team members, Nana Antwi, was arrested the day after she arrived because she wanted to travel from Norway to Sweden on a one-way train ticket.

In addition, the team’s coach, George Gyamfi Gyasi, tragically passed away shortly after being admitted to Oslo University Hospital on April 28, where he collapsed.

What has Norway done about this incident?

According to 3news, following this incident, the Norwegian Embassy in Accra has issued warnings to other Schengen and Western diplomatic missions in Accra to assist in the detention and repatriation of the team members.

What are the consequences?

The Minister of National Security has also warned that this incident could affect the chances of Ghanaian national teams to obtain visas for future competitions.

Ghanaian athlete makes Paralympic history

In an earlier publication, YEN.com.gh reported that Ghanaian athlete Zinabu Issah made Paralympic history by winning gold in the women’s discus throw (F57) at the 2024 Marrakech Grand Prix in Morocco.

With her impressive throw of 26.66 meters, Issah secured her victory and qualified for the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris.
