German citizen on death row in Belarus, says Foreign Ministry

The German Foreign Ministry said on Friday that a German citizen has been sentenced to death in Belarus and that Berlin is in intensive contact with authorities in Minsk over his fate, Reuters reported.

Belarus, a close ally of Russia, is the only country in Europe that still uses the death penalty.

The German ministry did not release the names of the subject, but earlier on Friday, the Belarusian human rights organization Viasna reported that a German citizen, Rico Krieger, had been sentenced to death in Belarus on charges related to terrorism and mercenary activities, the organization cited anonymous sources.

Viasna said in a statement on its website that Krieger had been in custody since November 2023 and was sentenced on June 24.

A statement from the German ministry said: “The Foreign Office and the embassy in Minsk are providing consular support to the person concerned and are working intensively with the Belarusian authorities on his behalf.”

The Belarusian Ministry of Justice, which has not reported any such case, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
