Pape Habib Gueye in Jimmy Thelin’s sights for new Aberdeen role after impressive loan spell

Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin hopes returning loanee Pape Habib Gueye can make an impact in the Granite City,

The former Senegal youth international joined Pittodrie for £500,000 last summer but played just seven games last season, failing to score. Gueye returned to Norway on loan at Kristiansund in February and has found his stride again, scoring five goals in 11 games for the top club.

The 24-year-old is back in training but will not be in the squad to face East Kilbride in Saturday’s Premier Sports Cup clash, but Thelin believes the forward can play a part in the coming weeks. He said: “He (Gueye) came back on Wednesday and had two sessions but won’t be in the squad this time. But there are a lot of games in the coming weeks and it’s good to have him back.

“He trained well on Wednesday and today. It’s good to get to know him as a player and as a person and we’ll take it step by step from there.

“He did well (on loan) and scored some good goals. He played more as a winger than a striker in the games. That league is also quite competitive, so it was a good way to show himself and play consistently.

Asked if he could play Gueye in a wide area for the Dons, Thelin replied: “That could be (a possibility) because he has these deep runs when he plays centrally. But now on the wing he plays one-on-one, so let’s see if he can find a mix. He’s only had two training sessions, so I need more time to make a decision. But he’s already in good shape.”
