Rangers vs Manchester United live early team news as Yoro and Sancho make calls, plus how to watch

Manchester United will be aiming for a first win of pre-season when they take on Rangers at Murrayfield Stadium this afternoon (kick-off 4pm).

United were beaten 1-0 in their season opener on Monday, losing to Rosenborg at Lerkendal Stadium, with Noah Emmanuel Jean Holm scoring a late winner for the hosts.

Manager Erik ten Hag travelled to Norway with a largely inexperienced squad, with a small number of first-team players. Mason Mount and Marcus Rashford were among the more established members of the squad.

United have named a 26-man travel group, with new signings Leny Yoro and Jadon Sancho the most notable names in the group. Andre Onana and Amad could also be involved.

The Reds, who beat Lyon 1-0 at Murrayfield last year, last faced Rangers in November 2010 when they met in a Champions League clash at Ibrox, with a late penalty from Wayne Rooney securing a 1-0 victory.

Yoro could get some playing time this afternoon

At least Leny Yoro has been included in the squad following his arrival from Lille. United paid a significant fee for the 18-year-old – £55m plus £8m in add-ons – and he could be the heart of their defence for the next decade. But in terms of the immediate future, Yoro should make his first first-half appearance for United today and it will be fascinating to see how he is used in the new campaign. He is still young to start every game at centre-back, but United have not yet spent so much as to leave him on the bench. Perhaps he could be used at right-back on occasion, which would make sense given that Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who is entering the final year of his contract, could leave this summer.

Once again several big names are missing

That United team isn’t worth the price of admission today. There are plenty of players who are rightly unavailable after major tournaments, but there are also a few senior players left behind. Somewhat unusually, neither Victor Lindelof nor Antony have been involved so far, although United say they have “small issues”. Harry Maguire is still not fully up to scratch after an injury at the end of last season.

Pre-match conversation topics

After Monday’s 1-0 defeat to Rosenborg in Norway, United will be hoping for a better performance when they take on Rangers this afternoon.

Erik ten Hag has named a mixed group of players in his travelling squad for the second game in a row. However, there is a spot in the 26-man squad that has travelled north for new signing Leny Yoro.

Jadon Sancho has also made it through and could wear a United shirt for the first time in almost a year.

A sporty Mecca

My colleague Tyrone Marshall has arrived in Edinburgh and is on his way to Murrayfield stadium.

United, best known for rugby, visited one of Edinburgh’s biggest attractions last year, facing Lyon, where they won 1-0 that afternoon thanks to striker Donny van de Beek in the second half.

Rashford ruled out

Marcus Rashford will not feature in this afternoon’s friendly against Rangers at Murrayfield.

United have confirmed he has not been included in the 26-man squad that travelled north due to a ‘minor issue’.

Ten Hag confirms De Ligt’s interest

United manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed the club are interested in Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt.

The Reds have agreed personal terms with the Netherlands international but are yet to make an official offer for his signature.

Ten Hag has admitted at this point that he is not yet sure whether he will be added to his selection. He told AD Sportwereld the following:

“Whether De Ligt will come is still the question. I know Matthijs well and I will not deny that. I wanted to sign him two years ago, but then he was already very far along to go to Bayern Munich. Believe it or not, his name did not come from me in the process (at United).”

United’s final visit to Murrayfield

Yesterday marked a year since United visited Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh, beating Lyon 1-0 on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon.

Donny van de Beek scored the only goal of the match shortly after half time.

United had previously beaten Leeds United in their season opener to make it two wins from two before flying to the US. The Reds will be hoping to cross the Atlantic for this summer’s tour with at least one win from their opening two games.

Yoro and Sancho in the race

United have named a 26-man squad for this afternoon’s match against Rangers, including new signings Leny Yoro and Jadon Sancho.

Yoro completed his move from Lille to Old Trafford on Thursday and could make his debut less than 48 hours after United announced his arrival.

Sancho has not played for United in any capacity since August last year.

Marcus Rashford was unable to travel to Scotland due to a minor injury.
