Forest fires break out in 68 places in Greece

Greece is battling a heat wave that has sparked forest fires in 68 locations across the country.

Authorities have issued an “orange warning” due to the “high fire risk” caused by scorching temperatures in many regions.

Greece is facing hard times due to a heat wave from Africa.

Due to the extreme heat, citizens were advised to stay indoors. Outdoor workers were given the right to stop working if temperatures exceeded 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit).

Employers who allow their employees to work under such conditions risk a fine of €2,000 per employee.

Officials said several regions were under a code orange warning due to the “high fire risk” caused by the intense heat.

Greek Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Vasilis Kikilias announced that 68 forest fires broke out yesterday.

“The ongoing heat wave and drought are making the work of firefighters more challenging. There were 68 forest fires in the country yesterday,” Kikilias said in a social media post.
