Sports News | SO Bharat wins prestigious Gothia Cup football tournament


New Delhi, Jul 20 (PTI) The Special Olympics Bharat (SO Bharat) football team emerged champions of the Gothia Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden, after a dominant performance during the tournament.

The meeting took place from July 14 to 18.

With the support of SKF India, the Indian team, consisting of athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities, remained undefeated in the group and won the trophy.

The SO Bharat team was placed in Group 5, together with Parasport Denmark 2, Special Olympics Finland Mixed, Special Olympics Hong Kong and Special Olympics Germany 1.

SO Bharat won the opening group match against SO Finland 3-0, followed by a commanding 6-0 victory over SO Germany.

The Indian team defeated Hong Kong 6-0 and then won 3-1 against SO Denmark to reach the final.

In the final, the match between SO Bharat and SO Denmark was exciting until the very last moment, but the former won the thrilling match 4-3.

Muhammad Shaheer, who hails from Kerala, scored seven goals, the most by any Indian player.

Shaheer, the son of a fisherman, has a passion for football and other sports including cycling and swimming.

Upon returning to the country on Saturday, the team was given a grand welcome at a felicitation ceremony attended by Raksha Khadse, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Mallika Nadda, President SO Bharat and Chairperson Asia Pacific Advisory Council (APAC), and Upasna Arora, Treasurer SO Bharat.

The SO Bharat contingent, which made its debut at the Gothia Cup in the ‘Gothia Special Olympics Trophy’, consisted of 10 athletes and three coaches from six states – Delhi, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
