Greek holiday warning: tourists ‘banned’ from popular city

Greece is a popular tourist destination for Britons, with many visitors flocking to the country’s beautiful islands, known for their stunning beaches and azure waters. The country’s history is also a major draw for visitors, with millions of tourists flocking to the Greek capital of Athens to see its famous landmarks, including the Acropolis.

But holidaymakers have been warned that tourism is “under threat” from “successive heatwaves”. The country has already suffered scorching heatwaves this summer, with attractions including the Acropolis temporarily closed to visitors in June.

Now, experts are warning that the extreme weather is having an impact on Athens’ tourism. Local news site ekathimerini.com reports that a hotel owner has noticed that holidaymakers are limited due to the bad weather conditions.

It said: “As one experienced hotelier notes, visitors, especially older ones, are effectively excluded from actively exploring the city when temperatures reach 36 degrees Celsius or more day in and day out, from before noon until almost evening.”

The publication added that the head of the Athens Observatory Kosta Lagouvardos warned that high temperatures would persist even after midnight, saying that “this summer, weather-wise, is extreme for our area.” It claims that some experts are suggesting that the tourist season could eventually move on to milder months.

This week, the Greek weather agency issued amber weather warnings for “very high temperatures.” The Greek National Weather Service said: “The southwesterly current prevailing in the lower layers of the atmosphere on the coasts of Africa and the central Mediterranean will transport warm air masses to our region and cause very high temperatures in our country, which will last at least until Friday (July 19).”
