American Airlines #AA293 to New York diverted to London after emergency declared

American Airlines flight from New Delhi to New York JFK declared emergency and diverted to London.

American Airlines flight #AA293 departed New Delhi Airport on Saturday, July 20, 2024 at 00:10 IST (scheduled at 23:30) for a 16-hour flight to New York City.

The Boeing 777-300ER (registration number N719AN) was in Norwegian airspace at an altitude of 36,000 feet when the crew declared an emergency.

After 9 hours of flying, the plane turned left towards Scotland and eventually departed for London 1 hour and 20 minutes later.

The choice of London Heathrow was probably due to a technical problem, as the airline had maintenance facilities and more possibilities to resume the flight.

The 11-year-old aircraft is being replaced by another Boeing 777-300ER (registration number N729AN), which arrived in London from Dallas-Fort Worth at 08:30 (BST) this morning.

Flight #AA293 will resume at 11:20 BST and is expected to land at New York JFK Airport at 14:10.

A few days ago, the exact same situation occurred on Sunday, July 14, 2024. Flight AA293 declared a state of emergency between Norway and Scotland and was diverted to London Heathrow due to a medical emergency.

The flight was operated by the Boeing 777-300ER (registration number N723AN) which resumed the flight to JFK several hours later.
