Russia raises import tariffs on consumer goods from ‘unfriendly countries’

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia has raised import duties on consumer goods including wine, beer, sweets, cookies and shampoo produced in countries that back sanctions against Moscow, according to a government decree published on Friday evening.

Russian imports from countries that imposed sanctions on Moscow over the military conflict with Ukraine fell in 2022 and the price of imported alcohol has risen significantly.

Some Western producers have stopped selling to Russia, but Moscow has found some clever ways to keep goods production going, including a grey import scheme. And there are still plenty of foreign goods on the shelves.

According to the order, for example, the tariffs for perfumes, cosmetics and shampoos from Poland will be 35% of the customs value. The duties for wallpapers from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia will increase to 50%.

Import duties on wine will be increased to 20%.

The new rates apply until December 31, 2024 and will take effect seven days after publication.
